Patient Assaults Intern at Gandhi Hospital
Hyderabad: In yet another instance of the unsafe circumstances and life-threatening situations under which doctors and the medical staff work, a female intern was assaulted in the casualty ward of Gandhi Hospital allegedly by a 70-year-old patient around 3.30 pm here on Wednesday.
According to Gandhi Junior Doctors Association (JUDA) vice-president Vamsi Krishna, “He had an outpatient slip with him. He attacked the intern as soon as she entered the ward. On noticing it, doctors rushed there and overpowered the attacker. The patient was handed over to the police and an official complaint has been lodged against him.”
The hospital superintendent reported the incident to the police, following which Chilkalguda police rushed to the scene and arrested the accused.
According to Chilkalguda inspector B. Anudeep, the assaulter J. Prakash from Bansilalpet was suffering from epileptic fits.
“He was brought for consultation by his family members and all of a sudden grew violent and physically assaulted the doctor on duty. However, other junior doctors intervened in time,” he said.
The Gandhi Juda, while condemning the incident, called for a swift and decisive action to ensure the safety and security of all medical staff and interns.
The association also sought measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
“We have registered a case of outraging the modesty of a woman against the accused,” Anudeep said.
