PETA India supporter stages protest against inhumane killing of fish

Large-scale fishing practices cause the deaths of countless marine animals, disrupt ecosystems, and contribute to severe pollution

Hyderabad: An estimated 2.7 trillion fish are killed each year for food, many in inhumane ways, says People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals-India. Large-scale fishing practices cause the deaths of countless marine animals, disrupt ecosystems, and contribute to severe pollution, it said. Highlighting these issues, a PETA India supporter dressed as a fish and staged a demonstration on Friday, urging people to adopt a vegan lifestyle.
PETA India campaigns coordinator Utkarsh Garg told Deccan Chronicle that fish experience suffering much like humans and other animals.

According to PETA India, fish are often impaled, crushed, gutted, or even dropped into boiling water while still alive. The organisation also highlighted the environmental hazards of the fishing industry, including overfishing, plastic waste, and pollution.

Fish farms have been reported to use unhealthy feeding practices, sometimes even involving human excreta, leading to contamination of seafood with high levels of mercury, lead, and microplastics. The consumption of fish has been linked to health risks such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancer.
