PIL accuses govt of inaction against fake ORS substitute in market

Hyderabad:The Endocrine Society of India, Hyderabad chapter, filed a petition before the Telangana High Court complaining against inaction of the government in preventing supply of fake ORS (oral rehydration solution) substitutes.
The society filed implead petition seeking the High Court to allow the society to submit its version in the pending PIL filed by a doctor in 2022 on the same issue pertaining to the open market sale of fake ORS substitutes, by mislabelling ‘oral rehydration solution.
The division bench, comprising acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Radha Rani on Thursday allowed the same and directed Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Union health ministry, enforcement division of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and others to file its contention by February 28.
In the implead petition, the society brought to the notice of the court that the high sugar content in the mislabelled ORS products poses a fatal risk to sick infants and children. They also violate provisions under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
