PIL against Vajpayee`s statue dismissed

Hyderabad:The Telangana High Court declined to interfere in the defence ministry’s decision to allow the installation of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s statue in the public garden at Picket, located in the Cantonment Board area.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Renuka Yara on Wednesday dismissed a PIL challenging the installation of political leaders' statues in the garden. The petitioner had urged the court to direct authorities to protect the 13-acre public space.

Petitioner Jetty Umeshwar Rao from Secunderabad informed the court that encroachments had already reduced the garden’s size by half. He argued that installing more statues would further restrict public space, depriving children of poor and weaker sections of basic recreational facilities. He also warned that the park could become a venue for political events, such as birthdays and anniversaries, potentially leading to further occupation by various parties.

Rao cited a Supreme Court ruling that prohibited the installation of statues in public areas and sought contempt proceedings against the authorities. However, the High Court dismissed the petition.
