Political heat rises ahead of GHMC panel polls

With just one year left for the GHMC elections, political parties are gearing up to win the mandate to administer one of the richest cities in India.

Hyderabad:With just one year left for the GHMC elections, political parties are gearing up to win the mandate to administer one of the richest cities in India.

As part of the heightened activity, zonal commissioners (ZCs) are preparing proposals worth `25 crore each, and political parties are reaching out to corporators ahead of the GHMC standing committee elections, which are scheduled for February 25.

GHMC, which is spread over 650 square km, is divided into six zones and each zone is headed by a zonal commissioner. The people living in the GHMC limits are represented by 150 corporators.

Before the 2023 state assembly elections, the then BRS government had instructed the ZCs to prepare developmental proposals. However, the state government did not sanction funds.

Expecting funds from the state government in coming months ahead of the GHMC polls, the ZCs are now preparing estimates for works such as storm water drains, laying/restoration of roads and development of parks. Typically, the works proposed by the ZCs are the ones recommended by MLAs or corporators.

“The proposals should not be linked with elections,” asserted a senior GHMC official, adding that only verbal instructions were given for finalising the proposals.

Corporators are also making frenzied attempts to get their works sanctioned.

Political parties are reaching to corporators belonging to other parties seeking support in the standing committee elections scheduled to be held on February 25 and GHMC elections next year.

Presently, the 15-member GHMC standing committee, which is the apex body of the corporation, comprises BRS and AIMIM members. With the Congress gaining strength in the council, it is attempting to make its presence felt in the committee.
