Hyderabad: Elections to one Graduate MLC constituency and two Teacher MLC constituencies in Telangana will be held on February 27 and the results would be declared on March 3.
The schedule towards this was released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday. The election process will commence after the election notification is issued on February 3. The last date for filing nominations is February 10, which will be followed by scrutiny of nominations the next day. Candidates can withdraw their nominations by February 13.
Elections are being held for the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar Graduates' constituency, Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar Teachers' constituency, and Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Teachers' constituency.
The six-year tenure of the incumbent MLCs — T. Jeevan Reddy (Congress) representing the Graduates constituency, Kura Raghotham Reddy (Independent-PRTU) from the Medak Teachers constituency and Alugubelli Narsi Reddy (Independent-UTF) from the Warangal Teachers constituency—will end on March 29.
Following the announcement, the model code of conduct has come into force in the poll-bound districts and will remain so until March 8.
The MLC elections will be a crucial test for the ruling Congress, the BRS and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ahead of the upcoming local body elections, including those for panchayats, zilla parishads, mandal parishads, and municipalities.
Incidentally, these will be the first elections in the state after Congress rode to power in December 2023. The results will give insights about potential anti-incumbency sentiments against the Congress government and also show which among BRS and BJP is the main opposition to the ruling party, whose mandarins are confident of sweeping the MLC elections, given its track-record of achievements.
The Congress is banking on strong support from both teachers and graduates.
