Poor facilities disrupt classes of OU students
Hyderabad: This year too, the students of Osmania University suffered because of a delay in the hostel accommodation process. This resulted in them missing nearly two weeks of classes.
Despite the commencement of classes on October 16, 2024, many students were unable to attend classes until after Diwali as the hostel mess was not operational and neither was the Wi-Fi fixed.
“While the first phase counselling list was released on September 13th, the girls' hostel mess remained closed till November 2. The hostel administration should speed up the scheduling process to prevent students from missing valuable classes," said Sushma, a student from Bhadradri Kothagudem.
The hostlers, when inquired about the delay in the hostel accommodation, were informed that there was a shortage of rooms. Uday Kiran, a student of Osmania Arts College, said, “The delay in the hostel accommodation process is the same every year, and the process of applying for the hostels after the commencement of classes is a major drawback for all the students coming from distant places.”
“There’s a shortage of rooms in the hostels, due to which we’re accommodating three to four students per room. This is primarily due to lack of funds,” said a superintendent of the chief warden office. He further said that it would not be feasible to open the mess for just twenty to thirty students, which led to the delayed opening.
The students have also raised concerns about other issues within the hostel premises. "The walk to the mess from the boys' hostel takes around five minutes, and the route lacks streetlights. We've even encountered snakes on our way, which is frightening," shared Mahipal, a hostler.
