Hyderabad: A three-month-pregnant woman was brutally assaulted by her husband near a private hospital in Gachibowli. The attack left her in a coma and her condition remains critical. The incident occurred on April 2 but came to light two days later after a disturbing video of the assault circulated on social media and sparked outrage.
Gachibowli inspector Habibullah Khan said that the victim, 22-year-old Shabana Parveen, a native of Howrah, was assaulted with a boulder by her husband after an argument. “A passerby who witnessed the assault attempted to intervene but was also attacked by the accused,” the inspector said.
According to police, Basharath, an interior designer working for a private firm and residing in Miyapur, had married Shabana in October 2024. The couple had moved to Hyderabad and were staying with his parents. They had frequent quarrels as the wife sought a separate residence.
Shabana was recently admitted to hospital due to health issues and was discharged on the day of the incident. Police said an argument broke out between the couple near the hospital, during which Basharath allegedly lost control and struck her with the boulder multiple times.
Eyewitness Prajwal Reddy, who tried to stop the attack, told Deccan Chronicle that he saw the accused strike the woman repeatedly with the boulder. “He hit her at least 15 times. I tried calling Dial 100, but the call kept disconnecting. I was helpless,” he said. Reddy added that nearby shopkeepers fled the scene out of fear.
The victim was initially taken to a private hospital and later shifted to Gandhi Hospital, where she remains in a coma and is stated to be in critical condition. Gachibowli police have booked a case of attempt to murder and taken the accused into custody. He has been sent to judicial remand at Sangareddy jail.
