Hyderabad: Opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, which created uproar in the Parliament, the former MLC and Telangana Waqf Board chairman Mohammed Saleem on Wednesday demanded the BJP-led NDA government to provide judicial powers to District Collectors, Police and revenue officers to protect Waqf lands and its properties across the country.
Speaking to media persons here on Wednesday, Saleem said that the BJP led NDA government is trying to pass the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. There were a number of objections and the need to pass the Bill in Parliament and Rajya Sabha after conducting a thorough debate on the Bill.
"In Telangana, 35,000 Institutions are being run by the Waqf Board and it possesses at least 40,000 acres of land and other properties in Telangana. We need to protect them and the newly introduced Bill must take measures to provide judicial powers to district collectors, police officers and revenue officers to protect these properties," Saleem demanded.
The BJP-led NDA government at Center introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 in Parliament and it caused uproar in the House. Later, the government decided to refer the Bill to a joint committee of the two Houses and asked to submit a report before next session.
Saleem said that they have already submitted representations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Chief Ministers A Revanth Reddy and N Chandrababu Naidu seeking their consideration to make a debate in Parliament in connection with providing judicial powers to District collectors to protect Waqf properties.
The religious leader Moulana Sami Jaffer Pasha said that the governments had passed the Waqf Bill in 1995 and 2013. This time, the government must not make any disturbances in making the Bill. Waqf properties must be protected, and the Bills should help the minorities to protect their properties.
