Hyderabad: The boat fire in the Hussainsagar on Sunday night caught holiday-makers and those attending a BJP event by surprise.
Dinesh Kannam, who was with his family at the People’s Plaza, said “We were all enjoying the fireworks show but within no time both the boats caught on fire. As they exploded, the earth beneath us shook and we immediately left the venue.”
Another visitor, Srija, said “I took my kid into my arms and ran out; I was very scared for my daughter. I hope the people who were in the boat got out safely.”
Mohd. Arif, a worker, said, “The crackers began bursting from all the sides. It was chaotic. We initially thought it was just one boat, but I moved to the side and saw two boats burning.”
Srinivas, a DRF staff, said “We are getting into the water and are using special pressurised nozzles to douse the fires. It is very difficult, as we climbed waist-deep into the water and are dousing the flames.”
A police constable, who requested not to be named, said "It happened within moments. One second it was fine, but within no time it became a big fireball. We immediately jumped into action and controlled the crowd, helping them leave the venue safely."
