QR Codes on Khairatabad Flyover Murals Teach History to Commuters

Hyderabad: As part of its city beautification works, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) added QR Codes to the paintings and artworks of prominent leaders of the freedom struggles of India and Telangana at Khairatabad Flyover as a pilot project.

The QR codes are redirected to the Wikipedia pages of the leaders, providing access to detailed information about their lives and contributions to the freedom movement, achievements and awards. This initiative not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the city but also serves an educational purpose by increasing awareness about the leaders among the younger generation.

On both sides of the flyover, commuters can see images of national leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh and Babu Rajendra Prasad. Along with national freedom fighters, murals of Telangana freedom fighters including Kaloji Narayana Rao, Sarojini Naidu, Komaram Bheem, Chakali Ilamma, Doddi Komuraiah and Konda Laxman Bapuji are etched on the walls.

A GHMC official said, "The purpose of the paintings is not just about adding beauty to the city. Educating people and the coming generations about our freedom fighters is equally important. This new idea of adding QR codes of their history combines art, technology and history to achieve all our goals."

A commuter, while speaking to Deccan Chronicle, said that he was previously unaware of Telangana freedom fighter Chakali Ilamma. “As I was waiting in the traffic on the Khairatabad Bridge, I saw her painting and a QR code to it. After scanning the QR Code, I learnt who she was, her courage and contributions during the Telangana Armed Struggle,” he explained.

The new initiative is expected to help thousands of commuters learn more about the leaders who gave their lives for the people. This educative artwork was funded by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and completed by the GHMC.
