Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced on Wednesday that the state government would soon introduce a comprehensive legislation aimed at ensuring the welfare and social security of gig workers.
The announcement came in response to a letter from AICC leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi who lauded the state’s proactive steps and urged for public consultations to enhance the legislation.
In his letter to the Chief Minister, Gandhi praised the ongoing socio-economic, educational, employment, political and caste survey in Telangana, emphasising the importance of a vibrant public consultation.
"I request you to conduct similar state-wide public consultations for the draft legislation for gig workers as well. Hearing from all parties will ensure that the law is robust, effective, and meaningful. The process can also help anchor future regulations for this sector," he wrote.
Expressing a keen interest to participate in the consultations, he highlighted the Congress’s commitment to protecting workers in contractual roles. He cited the Congress manifesto's pledge to enhance social security for gig workers and pointed to Rajasthan, where the Congress-led government became the first in the country to legislate for their welfare.
In response, Revanth Reddy assured Gandhi that the upcoming gig worker policy in Telangana would reflect inclusivity, fairness and comprehensiveness.
“All of our work is inspired by your vision, ideas, and work. It gives us more energy that the Telangana Caste Survey has made you feel proud,” Revanth posted on social media platform X, sharing a copy of Rahul Gandhi’s letter dated November 11.
