Rajendra Nagar residents struggle with polluted drinking water

Hyderabad:Residents of Rajendranagar and Shivarampally said they were being supplied polluted drinking water issue for four months. What began as a minor issue has now escalated into a severe crisis with no resolution in sight.

Iqbal Khan, a resident, said the issue, which started over a year ago, was initially manageable. "Earlier, the water would be blackish-grey for the first few minutes but would clear up. For the past four months, the water quality has worsened to the point where it’s not even fit to touch," he said.

Mohammed Sajjad Ali, another resident, expressed frustration over the lack of action from authorities. "We’ve filed multiple complaints and officials are aware of the problem, but nothing has been done," he said.

Mustafa, a resident, described receiving dirty water mixed with particles and a foul smell for nearly half an hour every evening. "What am I supposed to do with this water," he questioned.

Shanthi Kumari, a mother of two, highlighted the daily struggle. "Water is only released for one hour, and for the past four months, it has been the same. A supervisor visited three months ago, but no action has been taken. I am scared for my kids' health. How is it fair that we have to fight for something as basic as clean drinking water," she asked.

Residents have been informed that there could be a problem in the water supply system, with a potential mix of sewerage and drinking water due to faulty piping. "We were told that sewerage pipes are likely mixing with drinking water lines, but nothing has been done," a resident added. The community is demanding immediate action to resolve the issue.

Sources indicate that the contamination is caused by narrow pipelines where sewerage and drinking water lines are intertwined, further worsened by illegal water connections.

HMWS&SB officials claimed that the ongoing stormwater drain construction by the GHMC had damaged pipelines at 4-5 locations, letting the sewage seep into drinking water lines.

Officials assured that corrective measures have been initiated to restore clean water supply to the area and the issue will be resolved soon.
