Rat bites at Khammam govt. residential school paralyse girl’s limbs
Khammam: An alleged overdose of anti-rabies vaccine to a girl, who suffered rat bites at a government residential school, rendered one of her legs and hands paralysed.
The Class X girl of the BC Residential School for Girls at Danawaigudem in Khammam, S Lakshmi Bhavani Keerthi, is a native of Musthafa Nagar in Khammam district.
She called her mother four days back, complaining that she has severe pain and numbness in her hand and leg. Her mother rushed to the school and admitted her to a private hospital. Doctors in the hospital told her mother that the right leg and hand of her daughter are paralysed.
The woman told the doctor that Lakshmi suffered rat bites four times over last two years in the residential school and her limbs were paralysed due to overdose of anti-rabies injection.
The regional coordinator of BC Residential School, K Jyothsna, said that the student suffered from rat bites in February and anti-rabies injection was administered to her that time. No abnormality in her health condition was noticed since then, she added.
Meanwhile, Mamath Hospital came forward to treat Lakshmi. After examining her, doctors at Mamath Hospital said she suffered from neurological problem and her heart beat was abnormal. The doctors said that the exact reason for her sickness was yet to be identified.
Former MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah visited the hospital and consoled the student. He called district collector Muzmmil Khammam, asking him to ensure that the girl gets best treatment. He alleged that multiple administration of anti-rabies injection in a short span of time impacted the health of the student.
Former minister T. Harish Rao on ‘X’, said that pathetic condition prevailed in government residential schools. He said the state government conducted ‘Gurukula Baata’ and washed out its hand.
He alleged that proper treatment was not extended to Lakshmi when she suffered rat bites. He urged the government to shift her to NIIMS at Hyderabad and provide best treatment to her.
