Revanth Reddy backs demand for Telugu varsity name change
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said the government would consider renaming Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University after Telangana freedom fighter Suravaram Pratap Reddy. He lauded the latter’s role in the Telangana armed struggle and said the government had no objection if there was consensus on the matter. The name change idea was also welcomed by BRS leaders.
The CM was responding to a suggestion by CPI MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao, quoting a letter written by senior leader Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy who cited Pratap Reddy’s role in the armed struggle.
Suravaram Pratap Reddy was popularly known as “Telangana Vythalikudu (torch bearer)”. He was a freedom fighter, social historian, writer, poet, scholar, reformer, lawyer, journalist, editor and founder of various socio-cultural and educational organisations. Pratap Reddy was the editor of the ‘Golkonda’ magazine and authored more than 40 books, prominent among them being Andhrula Sanghika Charitra (which won him the first-ever Kendra Sahitya Academy Award for Telugu), Ramayana Viseshalu, Hinduvala Pandugalu, Haindava Dharmaveerulu among others.
In his letter, the CPI leader reminded that the name change idea was also accepted by BRS leader K. Chandrashekar Rao.
Discussing another suggestion in the letter, the CM informed that the government was studying a law passed by Tamil Nadu government recognising the right of the security guards, class four employees and home guards to sit at the work place and could be considered favorably.
