Nizamabad: Rythu Bima, an insurance scheme for farmers, boosted the moral of the farming community, especially small and marginal farmers. The Telangana government made an agreement with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to provide free insurance scheme facility to the farmers. Due to various reasons, farmers are prone to accidents like electrocution, snakebites and health issues.

If a small or marginal farmer dies, his family members face untold miseries. Due to illiteracy and poor financial conditions, small and marginal farmers are unable to buy life insurance from LIC or other insurance companies. As a result, the death of a farmer adversely affects the family. In view of this, Telangana government provided Rythu Bima to farmers.

In Nizamabad district, around 1,66,915 farmers enrolled under the Rythu Bima scheme. Every year, the state government invites applications from farmers for the Rythu Bima and new farmers, who either bought the agricultural land or inherited it are eligible for the scheme. The agriculture department received 6,936 applications for Rythu Bima in Nizamabad district this year.

Rythu Bima nodal officer Srikar said 1,067 farmers availed the Rythu Bima benefits in 2023. Rs 53.35 crore was credited to the bank accounts of deceased farmers’ kin, he said. Farmers aged between 18 and 59 are eligible to apply for Rythu Bima, he said. Discrepancies in nominee details or NRI accounts, issuing of policy or claims will be delayed, he said.

Parige Laxmikanth Reddy, agriculture officer in Renjal mandal, said out of 235 claims over last five years, only one claim was rejected. One farmer submitted a changed Aadhar card to mislead age details in Rythu Bima application, he said. "We are taking all precautions to either apply or claim settlement of Rythu Bima," he added.
