During the past year, seven firing incidents including a police personnel firing in self defence were reported.

Hyderabad: The shooting at a jewellery store at Karimnagar follows a series of similar cases reported in the state capital January 2024 and has brought the spotlight on the increasing circulation of illegal firearms.

On January 16 last year, armed robbers, after looting Rs 97 lakh from an ATM in Bidar and killing a security guard, opened two rounds of fire at a travels office at Afzalgunj. A staffer was injured. The duo is yet to be arrested.
On November 30 last, two persons struck at businessman Mohammed Sultan’s house in Bhavaninagar, threatened him at knife point, and made off with `40 lakh. They were later arrested.
Among the other major incidents was the Pocharam shootout in October last, in which a member of a cow protection group was shot at and injured following a dispute over cattle transportation.
Also in October, when a former east zone DCP opened fire at a rowdy-sheeter during a chase after the latter allegedly attempted to stab him, near Victoria Playground.
In August 2025, a firing incident was reported at a Khazana Jewellery showroom in Chandanagar, triggering panic among staff and customers.
In July 2025, CPI leader Chandu Rathod was shot dead in Malakpet by assailants suspected to be professionally trained. Police said the attackers allegedly used chilli powder to disorient the victim before opening fire.
In November 2024, a domestic dispute escalated into gunfire in Saroornagar, where a man allegedly opened fire on his girlfriend’s father after learning that the family planned to send her abroad to end the relationship.
