Shiv Sena leader held after woman killed in son’s hit and run accident
Mumbai: In the third incident of hit and run in Maharashtra in a span of two months, a 45-year-old woman died in Mumbai's Worli area after a speeding BMW rammed into a bike on Sunday morning.
The car was being driven allegedly by Mihir Shah, the son of a leader of Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The 24-year-old man has been absconding since the incident.
Rajesh Shah, Mihir's father, has been detained by the police. The BMW was registered in his name, according to the police. Vehicle driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, who was present in the car at the time of the accident, has also been detained.
The incident took place at around 5:30 a.m near Atria Mall in Worli. The deceased woman has been identified as Kaveri Nakhwa (45), a resident of Worli Koliwada, who was heading back along with her husband Pradip Nakhaw (50) to sell fish after procuring it from Sassoon dock.
The car hit the couple’s scooter from behind following which they lost balance and landed on the bonnet of the vehicle. Pradip managed to jump off, but Kaveri, who was carrying a heavy load, could not. She was dragged for 100 metres, suffering severe injuries. Both were rushed to Nair Hospital, but Kaveri succumbed to her injuries.
Calling it a "very unfortunate incident," chief minister Shinde promised that the case will be investigated impartially.
“The hit-and-run incident that happened in Mumbai is unfortunate. I have spoken to the police, and strict action will be taken as per the law. Everyone will be treated equally,” the CM said.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackrey visited the Worli police station and met the husband of the victim. He called for swift arrest of the accused and urged rising beyond politics to ensure strict action in hit-and-run cases.
“Visited the Worli Police Station today and met with senior police officers investigating the hit-and-run case that occurred in Worli today. I will not go into the political leanings of Mr Shah, the accused of the hit-and-run, but I hope the police will act swiftly to catch the accused and bring him to justice. Hopefully there will be no political refuge by the regime,” he wrote on X.
The incident comes on the backdrop of the Pune Porsche case in which two software engineers were killed after a 17-year-old, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, hit a motorcycle on May 19.
On June 23, a 19-year-old youth died in another hit and run incident after the bike he was riding was hit by an SUV moving on the wrong side on the Pune Nashik Highway at Manchar. The driver, who fled the scene after the accident and was arrested later, was identified as Mayur Mohite, the nephew of NCP MLA Dilip Mohite.
