Special assembly session on Feb 5; set to approve caste census, SC sub-categorisation

The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy at the Police Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) here on Saturday.

Hyderabad:The state government has decided to hold a special session of the Legislative Assembly on February 5 to approve reports on caste census and sub-categorisation of Scheduled Castes into four groups (A, B, C, D).

The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy at the Police Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) here on Saturday.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, BC welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar said that the reports on caste census and SC sub-categorisation will be submitted to the cabinet sub-committee on Sunday. The cabinet sub-committee will deliberate on the two reports and submit the final reports to the state government on February 4.

Revanth Reddy will convene a cabinet meeting on the morning of February 5 to discuss and approve the reports on caste census and SC sub-categorisation. Later, these reports will be tabled in the special session of Legislative Assembly on the evening of the same day.

These reports will be approved after holding the debate in the House, he said.

The government wants to enhance reservations for BCs in the upcoming gram panchayat elections based on the caste census data as well as on the report of the Dedicate BC Commission, which was constituted to recommend enhancement of reservations for BCs. The government is planning to hold elections for gram panchayats in March as per new reservations.

The government also wants to sub-categorise SC reservations into four groups as directed by the Supreme Court last August.

The state government appointed Justice Shameem Akhter to head a one-man commission on SC sub-classification in October last year. It will submit its report to the state government on Sunday.
