1,000 Dengue Cases in Telangana in Just 6 Days, Spike in Fever Cases

Hyderabad: The recent spell of rain has led to a spike in vector-borne and viral fever diseases with the number of dengue cases surging past the 6,000 mark to 6,405 so far this year, as on Monday. The number of dengue cases stood at 5,372 cases on August 25.

There were no deaths due to dengue, a press note from the health department stated.

In the same period, chikungunya cases rose from 152 to 178, and malaria to 200 from 191.

The state government has earmarked 10 high-risk dengue districts which include: Hyderabad, Suryapet, Medchal Malkajgiri, Khammam, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Ranga Reddy, Jagitial, Sangareddy and Warangal. Daily updates were collected from across the state, said T. Balaji, additional joint director, of public health.

About 90 per cent of cases at the Fever Hospital in Nallakunta were those of viral fever, said CSRMO Dr A. Jayalaxmi. The hospital saw 689 patients until Monday afternoon. Last week, the number had crossed 900. "Food and water contamination is a major cause of illness in this season," she said.

However, the situation was better this year as compared to previous years.

A press release said health minister Damodar Rajanarsimha had senior officials had been monitoring the situation. Senior officials have visited various districts and health centres.
