Khammam: A first-year Intermediate student died by suicide in her hostel room at Sri Chaitanya Junior College in Kavirajunagar early on Friday morning.
According to reports, she left her study period at 6.25 am, reportedly to relieve herself. When she failed to return after an hour, fellow students searched for her, and went to her hostel room which locked from the inside. They called the hostel staff who broke open the door and found the student.
She was shifted to a private hospital for treatment and then taken to a Government General Hospital in Khammam where she was declared dead.
Students unions PDSU and SFI staged a protest at the Government General Hospital following the incident, stating that no action had been taken though four students had died by suicide and several others had sustained injuries from similar incidents at the college. The demonstrators demanded the closure of the Kavirajunagar branch of Sri Chaitanya Junior College.
Tensions escalated when police denied student leaders permission to meet the parents of the victim at the hospital, sparking heated arguments. Union leaders alleged that restrictions on media and parent interactions were attempts to conceal facts surrounding the student's death and protect the college management.
Police suspect that the pressure of the upcoming annual examinations, scheduled to begin on March 5, may have contributed to the victim’s distress. An investigation has been launched by the Khammam Town police to determine the circumstances leading to the student's suicide.
