Students bodies call for cancellation of college licence

Hyderabad: CMR Engineering College in Medchal is facing intense criticism and protests after a hidden camera was reportedly found in the girls’ hostel washroom. The news broke through an Instagram post, which claimed the phone used for recording contained nearly 300 videos taken over the course of a month. The post also alleged that signals were being jammed to prevent the incident from being reported and urged the public to amplify the issue.

The revelation has sparked widespread outrage among students, who gathered in large numbers to protest outside the college, demanding immediate action. They accused the college management of failing to ensure their safety and called for accountability. Students chanted slogans and held placards to highlight their distress and outrage over the gross violation of privacy.

“It feels like our trust has been shattered. We can’t believe this happened in a place where we were supposed to feel safe,” said one first-year student. Another student added, “It’s terrifying to know that someone was watching us without our knowledge. We need answers and immediate action from the management.”

The Students’ Protection Forum (SPF) took the lead in escalating the issue, submitting a memorandum to JNTUH registrar Venkateshwar Rao. The forum demanded a comprehensive investigation, specifically urging authorities to examine CCTV footage from the ground floor of the hostel during the critical hours of January 1. “The university must act to ensure incidents like this never happen again. Regular monitoring and appointing only female staff in girls’ hostels are essential steps,” said Rahul Naik, an SPF representative.

The SFI also called for the cancellation of the college’s accreditation and the transfer of students to safer institutions.

Student leaders also demanded an impartial inquiry into the roles of hostel wardens Preeti and Dhanalakshmi, alleging potential negligence. “Parents send their daughters to these hostels, trusting the administration to provide a safe environment. That trust has been completely betrayed,” said Gopal Chandu, another student leader.

Protesters have called on the college to take responsibility and issue a public apology. They also warned that further protests would follow if swift and transparent action is not taken.
