Supreme Court adjourns hearing on MLA disqualification petitions

A bench comprising Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice George Masih heard arguments in the case filed by BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy.

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court hearing on petitions concerning the disqualification of MLAs who switched allegiances has been adjourned for a week. A bench comprising Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice George Masih heard arguments in the case filed by BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy.

Reddy's lawyer argued that the High Court had directed a decision on the disqualification issue within four months, a deadline set in March of last year, which has not been met. The petitioner's counsel emphasised the Speaker's failure to act within the stipulated timeframe.
Representing the Assembly Secretary, senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi informed the court that the Speaker had already issued notices to the MLAs in question. He also cited previous Supreme Court orders granting Speaker and MLAs sufficient time to address such matters.
The Supreme Court bench then questioned how much additional time the Speaker required, before adjourning the case for one week.
