Suryapet: Husband, Six Others Arrested after Botched Abortion Kills Woman
Suryapet: Chivvemla police on Monday arrested seven persons, including the husband of a pregnant woman who died following a botched abortion at a private hospital in Huzurnagar, Suryapet district.
The police made the arrests after a complaint was filed by Ramavathi Suhasini's parents that their daughter died on June 27 due to health complications that developed following an abortion.
The arrested were identified as Suhasini,s husband Rathnavath Hari Singh, 37, a doctor Kammampati Guruvaiah, staff of New Kamala Hospital Huzurnagar, Shaik Khasim and Devarakonda Rani, registered medical practitioners (RMP) Ranapangu Gopi, Shaik Saidulu and Amaragoni Naveen.
The arrests were made for illegally conducting a sex determination test and the abortion.
At a media conference here, superintendent of police Sunpreeth Singh said Hari Singh, a native of MG Nagar thanda in Chivvemla mandal, had two daughters and a strong desire to have a son. He took his pregnant wife to a hospital in Kodad for sex determination.
Kammampati Guruvaiah, who was working in Vijaya Hospital at Kodad, performed the sex determination test for Rs 11,000. He confirmed the gender of the fetus as female.
Shaik Khasim and Devarakonda Rani of New Kamala Hospital performed the abortion by charging `35,000. However, Suhasini's condition turned critical and she died while she was being shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment.
The SP said that the arrested RMPs acted as mediators between private hospitals and Hari Singh.
He said that cases were filed against the seven arrested persons under sections 304-II and 314 of IPC, sections 5(2), 5(3) of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and sections 23(1) (3) of the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act.
