Tamil families in Hyderabad set for a grand Pongal celebration today

HYDERABAD: Thousands of Tamil families in the city are all geared up for a royal Pongal celebration here on Tuesday. It marks the culmination of ‘Margali masam’, which is considered an auspicious month by the community all over.

Detailing about the rituals in the run-up to Pongal, Sandhya Akash said, “We celebrate the 30 days on a great note. The highlight of the festivities is the chariot procession. The attire, food and dances will all be traditional. I am the fourth generation member of my family in Hyderabad.”

Pongal events are underway in Cavalry lane, between Kaukur and Yapral, where over 100 Tamil families, mostly ex-servicemen, live.

The colony has a Sri Kannabiran temple with Lord Krishna as the presiding deity. Explaining its historical significance, Ramu Dhamodaran said “the idol in this temple was originally in the present day Pakistan. When the brigade stationed there was deployed here, they brought the idol, which has been installed in this temple.”

Gayatri Sukumaran, who resides in the colony, said “The whole area is in festive mood and all houses are duly decorated. We had rangoli competitions. We invite friends and relatives to take part in the Pongal celebrations.”
