VIJAYAWADA: In a significant development within the Telugu Desam, education minister Nara Lokesh assumed office as the party’s Working President at the TD central headquarters in Mangalagiri on Wednesday.
Party president and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu administered the oath to Lokesh in the presence of senior party functionaries, marking “an important step in strengthening the party’s organisational structure” ahead of future political challenges.
Lokesh asserted that he had risen in politics solely because of the sacrifices and dedication of the party leaders and cadre, and promised to work tirelessly for the welfare of Telugu people and the strengthening of the TD.
Addressing the concluding session of the oath-taking ceremony of the newly constituted national and state executive committees at the TD headquarters in Mangalagiri, Lokesh called for collective leadership, discipline and ideological commitment within the organisation.
Stating that the responsibility on him had increased manifold, Lokesh thanked the party president for entrusting him with the key organisational role at a relatively young age. “I cannot shoulder this responsibility alone. We must all work together to achieve our goals,” he said, stressing that arrogance had no place in politics or party functioning.
Recalling the legacy of TD founder and former chief minsiter late N.T. Rama Rao, Lokesh said the party was established to uphold Telugu self-respect and had grown into a major force in national politics under Naidu’s leadership. “TD knows both grassroots politics and Delhi politics. We never stepped back after defeat nor became arrogant after victory,” he remarked.
The minister said the party had stood firmly with its cadre through difficult times and would continue to do so. He referred to several party workers who faced political violence and harassment during the previous YSR Congress rule and described them as his inspiration.
Highlighting the welfare measures and development initiatives undertaken by the alliance government in AP, Lokesh said the state was simultaneously pursuing welfare and development “like the two wheels of a cart.”
The minister claimed AP has emerged as a major investment destination, attracting leading companies including Google, ArcelorMittal, TCS, Cognizant and Reliance. He alleged that opposition parties were indulging in “destructive politics” and attempting to claim credit for projects initiated by the present state government.
Calling on party leaders to stay connected with the people, Lokesh urged cadres to actively use the “My TDP” app and ensure that public grievances are addressed promptly. He also stressed the need to create leadership opportunities from the grassroots to the national level within the party structure.
Lokesh underlined the importance of continuity in governance, saying states like Gujarat and Odisha had progressed due to political stability.
Earlier in the day, while addressing a training programme for newly inducted executive committee members, Lokesh advised leaders not to be arrogant after getting positions and asked them to move forward by taking everyone along. He said the performance of leaders would be reviewed once every three months and urged them to improve coordination and organisational management.
