Telangana: CM to inaugurate Yadadri Thermal Power plant's 2nd unit

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will visit the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant on December 7 to inaugurate power generation in the second unit. The Telangana Power Generation Corporation (TG Genco) is constructing a 4,000 MW thermal power plant with five units, each having a power generation capacity of 800 MW, at Veerlapalem near Damaracherla in the Nalgonda district.

The project is being developed in multiple stages. Stages I and II have already been completed and connected to the power grid, while the remaining stages are expected to be completed by May 2025. Once fully operational, the ultra-mega power project will have a total capacity of 4,000 MW across five units and is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Telangana’s energy infrastructure.

The plant’s construction and energy integration efforts are part of a broader initiative to ensure a sustainable and reliable power supply for industries, agriculture, and households across Telangana.

The project faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other factors. After the Congress government came to power, steps were initiated to review the progress of the power plant works on a weekly basis. Deputy chief minister and power minister Bhatti Vikramarka set a calendar of works to ensure speedy completion.

Although the government had set a target to achieve 2,400 MW production by the end of the current year and the remaining 1,600 MW by March-end, it may take more time to meet these targets. Built entirely in the public sector by TG Genco, the plant aims to support the state’s agricultural sector and provide employment in the region. The plant will use coal from Singareni Collieries and water from the Krishna River for its operations.

According to Genco officials, the project is being constructed at a cost of Rs 29,965 crore, and work worth Rs 21,837 crore has already been completed. Bhatti Vikramarka recently highlighted the importance of the Yadadri plant in addressing the growing energy demands of Telangana.

The state government is also focusing on renewable energy, aiming to generate 20,000 MW of green power as part of its broader energy strategy. This aligns with the state’s plan to meet a projected peak demand of over 31,800 MW by 2034-35.
