Hyderabad: As many as 135 quacks came under the scanner of Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) this year for illegally stocking and selling medicines. The DCA registered cases against these 135 quacks for initiating action against them.
On Saturday, officials raided the premises of a quack identified as A. Naveen Reddy, at Muduchintalpally Village in Medchal-Malkajgiri district for allegedly practicing medicine without proper qualification at his clinic by name ‘Swapna Clinic’, according to DCA Director-General V B Kamalasan Reddy.
During the raid, DCA officials detected 38 varieties of medicines, including antibiotics, anti-diabetic drugs, antihypertensive drugs, etc. stocked on the premises without a drug license. The officials seized the stock, which included physician's samples from the possession of Reddy’s wife A. Swapna.
The worth of the seized medicines is Rs. 14,600. The DCA officials detected several antibiotics - Ofloxacin, Gentamycin, Amoxycllin plus Potassium Clavulanate at the clinic during the raid. Indiscriminate sale of antibiotics by unqualified persons may have disastrous consequences on the health of the public, including emergence of antimicrobial resistance.
In a separate raid, the DCA officials detected certain medicines circulating in the market with misleading claims on their labels, stating that they treat ‘ulcers of gastrointestinal tracts’ and ‘disorders of menstrual flow’. Such claims are in contravention of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act- 1954.
Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act-1954, prohibits advertisement of certain drugs for treatment of certain diseases and disorders. No person shall take part in publication of advertisement regarding the diseases or disorders indicated under Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act-1954.
