Telangana Doctors Protest in Karimnagar, Call for Enhanced Safety After Kolkata Tragedy
Hyderabad: In solidarity with the junior doctor who was raped and murdered in Kolkata last week, the Telangana Teaching Government Doctors Association (TTGDA) organised a candlelight march in Karimnagar on Monday.
Around 500 doctors participated in the march. Solidarity was expressed by observing a two-minute silence at government hospitals in Badradri, Khammam and Ramagundam.
"The issues of doctors' safety and security have come to light with this incident. While there are some questions unanswered in the case itself, there are issues in Telangana also that need to be addressed,” said Dr Kiran Madhala, state secretary-general, TTGDA.
“Doctors do not have proper duty rooms, changing rooms and even clean washrooms at hospitals. These are significant issues that require government's attention. Around 70 per cent of the health work force is women. If there is no safety for a highly educated woman, what is the safety of others," Dr Madhala asked.
