Karimnagar: The long-awaited dream of the oustees of the Mid Manair Dam (MMD) reservoir in Rajanna Sircilla district is set to become a reality, with the Congress government approving the construction of 4,696 houses under the Indiramma Housing Scheme.
The MMD reservoir project, initiated by the Congress government in 2006 at Manewada village in Boinapally mandal, was aimed at providing irrigation water to approximately 2.32 lakh acres in the surrounding areas. The construction of the dam was completed in 2019, but it led to the total submersion of 12 villages, displacing 10,863 families.
Under the relief and rehabilitation package, the BRS government had promised Rs 5.04 lakh and land to each displaced family for house construction. However, compensation was sanctioned to only 5,987 families, who were allotted 242 square yards of land in rehabilitation colonies.
In 2016, following a breach in the dam, BRS chief K. Chandrashekar Rao visited the district and assured displaced families of Rs 2 lakh compensation for each adult family member above 18 years. Of the 4,000 eligible individuals, compensation was sanctioned for only 2,000.
District authorities later submitted a proposal to the Telangana Housing Corporation Limited (TGHCL), emphasising the need to rehabilitate the remaining 4,696 families.
Responding to the proposal, the state government issued orders under GO No.7 for the construction of 4,696 houses under the State Reserve Quota (SRQ) Indiramma Housing Scheme. Each housing unit will receive a grant of Rs 5 lakh.
