Telangana Govt Plans NDRF-Like Teams for Disaster Response

HYDERABAD: Taking serious note of the recent floods that wreaked havoc, the state police officials are contemplating to form specialised teams on par with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to participate in rescue operations in emergency situations in the state.

Following Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's call for having special teams in the state, officials have been directed to frame guidelines for the teams and their training regimen. The Chief Minister has sought special teams that were on par with NDRF after visiting the flood hit-areas.

Senior police officials will be forming the teams from the state police battalions.

Sources said that the government would form ten teams initially and each team would have ten members. They will be trained at the state police academy on going about rescue operations during floods, calamities, fire mishaps and other such contingencies. Towards this, they will draft syllabus that will cover first response when any calamity strikes, handling equipment, boat maintenance, safety of educational institutions, handling cyclone fury and deep diving, among other related issues.

"The government is likely to direct DGP Dr. Jitender to frame guidelines, form teams and to provide proper training, coordinate with the Police Academy, and prepare the syllabus," the sources said.
