Telangana govt proposes five wildlife sanctuaries for Ramsar site tag

Hyderabad: Five wildlife sanctuaries in Telangana have been proposed by the government to be tagged as Ramsar sites under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.

The State government has proposed the five wildlife sanctuaries include Kinnerasani lake, Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary, Manjeera, Pocharam and Ramappa lake.
India has 82 Ramsar sites which includes Sundarban wetlands, Kolleru lake, Sasthamkotta lake and more. Whereas, Telangana has no site so far.
Ramsar Convention promotes conservation and wise use of wetlands. This international agreement is only treaty that focuses on a single ecosystem. It consists of 168 member countries and it is named after the city in Iran, Ramsar, where the treaty was signed.
A Ramsar site is a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, also known as "The Convention on Wetlands."
As of November 2023, there are 2,500 Ramsar sites around the world, protecting 257,106,360 hectares (635,323,700 acres), and 172 national governments are participating.
