Telangana: Mala Leaders Oppose SC Ruling, Push for Reservation Reforms

Vivek seeks 20 pc quota for Malas

Hyderabad: Raising objections to the Supreme Court judgement in connection with the categorisation of Scheduled Castes, Mala community leaders on Sunday passed a resolution unanimously demanding that the government consider providing 20 per cent reservations to the Mala community in jobs, education and financial assistance schemes.

Mala community leaders were speaking at a public meeting, Mala Simha Garjana, at the Parade Ground in Secunderabad on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering, Congress MLA Vivek Venkatswamy felt that the apex court order was a ploy to reduce reservations for the Mala community.

He said that Dr B.R. Ambedkar had earmarked Article 341 of the Constitution to provide reservations for the SC community in jobs, education, and financial assistance. "Amending Article 341 which was written by Ambedkar is a violation and a plot to divide the SCs into groups. We demand that the government provide reservations for SCs based on population, a view shared by AICC leader Rahul Gandhi," Vivek said.
"Some people have levelled the allegation that this garjana is being organised as there is no Cabinet berth for me. It is not true. I fight for the Mala community and SC's rights. We want to prove ourselves as a major community to get 20 per cent reservations," he said.

The gathering passed a resolution on providing 20 per cent reservations, SC sub-plan funds, patta land rights for Malas residing in hamlets on par with those provided to STs, reservations in the private sector, and financial assistance from the government for Mala students for pursuing overseas education.
