Telangana: Pressure from Moneylender Pushes Couple to Die by Suicide

Warangal: Unable to bear harassment from a moneylender, a couple died by suicide in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district on Tuesday night.

The deceased were identified as Banoth Devander (37) and his wife Chandana (32), residents of Kamalapur village. They are survived by a son and a daughter.

The couple worked as farmhands and, despite their modest means, prioritised educating their children. A few months ago, Chandana, a member of a women’s group, borrowed Rs 2.5 lakh from a moneylender.

She was required to repay RS 200 per week. Although they initially managed the payments, the family faced health issues, and Chandana defaulted on the installments for several months. The moneylender subjected the couple to severe mental pressure.

Their financial struggles, compounded by health issues and constant harassment, turned a small loan into an unbearable burden. Unable to cope, the couple took the extreme step, leaving their children orphaned.

Circle inspector D. Naresh Kumar revealed that Chandana had attempted suicide on December 6 due to the harassment and was admitted to MGM Hospital. Devander, distressed over their situation, ended his life on December 20. Chandana, who was undergoing treatment, passed away on Tuesday night.

The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
