Telangana Records Higher Formal Job Creation in 8 Months, Secures 7th Place Nationwide

Hyderabad: Telangana has witnessed a remarkable surge in formal job creation, with the state reaching an eight-month high in the current fiscal year (2024-25), according to the latest monthly payroll data released by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) for November 2024. The state ranked seventh among the top-10 states in the country for formal job creation.

The data indicates a positive trend in employment opportunities across Telangana, with net EPFO member additions showing significant growth. A statement from the ministry of labour and employment highlighted that this increase signifies a greater awareness of employee benefits, driven by EPFO’s outreach initiatives.

In November 2024 alone, Telangana added 19,996 new EPFO members, contributing to the national total of 14.63 lakh new members across the country — a growth of 4.88 per cent compared to the same month in 2023. Notably, Telangana's new member base included 18,863 individuals in the 29-35 age group, reflecting a strong middle-age workforce engagement.

One of the most striking aspects of Telangana's payroll data was the dominance of the youth segment. A total of 37,925 new members in the state were in the 18-25 age group, a pattern consistent with previous trends that show first-time job seekers driving the growth in the organised workforce.

Within this group, 16,078 new members were between 18 and 21 years old, and 21,907 members were between 22 and 25 years old.

Nationally, Maharashtra led the country, contributing 20.86 per cent of the net member additions in November, with a total of 64,332 new members. Other states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Gujarat, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh also made significant contributions, each adding over five per cent to the national total.

Since EPFO began releasing monthly payroll data in April 2018, the data has tracked first-time members joining through Aadhaar-validated Universal Account Numbers (UAN), as well as members exiting and rejoining the system.

For Telangana, the growth has been consistent throughout the current fiscal year, with notable additions in previous months as well: 12,647 members in April, 15,428 in May, 15,178 in June, 18,591 in July, 16,215 in August, 13,949 in September, and 16,196 in October.

This trend highlights a promising outlook for Telangana’s labor market, with youth employment and the expansion of formal sector jobs continuing to gain momentum.
