Telangana registers significant convictions in rape and POCSO cases in 2024

Hyderabad: A systematic and structured system of supervision and monitoring of investigation and prosecution was being followed in connection with major offences reported across the State. This yielded dividends in terms of convictions received in such crimes, according to Telangana police.

In 2024, Telangana police achieved good convictions including a recent capital punishment awarded by the MSJ Court in Ranga Reddy district in a case involving rape and murder of a young girl in Narsingi police station.

In the current year, Telangana saw significant convictions in rape and POCSO cases with 15 convictions for 20 years, two convictions for 25 years, and 11 convictions for life imprisonment, totaling 28 convictions. The highest number of significant convictions was recorded in Hyderabad and Rachakonda, each with a total of five convictions.

This was possible because of the keen focus on the investigation milestones set for investigating officers (IOs) and supervisory officers to ensure continuity of quality till conviction is ensured. Also support to the victim through the Bharosa centres has helped in empowering the victims.

Not only do the Bharosa centres ensure the victim a supportive environment, the team also follows up and supports the victim during trial of the cases. Some of the noteworthy convictions secured in the past few months include a father of eight children getting life imprisonment for repeatedly raping his own daughter.

In a case of forcible unnatural sexual offence committed against a young boy in Adilabad, the accused got rigorous imprisonment for 20 years and fine of Rs.10,000. A rag picker, who raped his daughter, got 25 years of rigorous imprisonment.

In most of the crimes committed against women and children, almost 95 per cent of the accused are known persons’ resulting in victim’s family members turning hostile during trial. Continuous support by Bharosa centre staff and local police has ensured that in the above cases the prosecution case was well supported with evidence.

Director-General of Police Jitender in a recent meeting held with all staff and unit officers reiterated that the primary focus of all officers must be on quality of investigation to secure convictions. It was reiterated by the DGP that there shall be zero tolerance for crime against women and children.

He appreciated the role of Bharosa centres, IOs, court duty officers and public prosecutors in obtaining these important convictions which would act as a deterrent against such crimes.
