Unique Protest: Free Veggies to People in Peddapalli
Karimnagar: Amid rising vegetable prices, retail vendors on Tuesday distributed tonnes of vegetables free of cost to people as part of their protest against wholesale vegetable merchants in Peddapalli.
Learning about the protest, people from surrounding colonies rushed to the market and collected bagfuls of vegetables.
In the past, an agreement was reached that wholesale merchants would sell vegetables in large quantities while retail vendors would sell them in small quantities.
But with a sharp rise vegetable prices consumers began restricting their purchase of vegetables. This resulted in the vegetables rotting in godowns, and wholesalers entered the retail market.
Retail vendors urged the wholesalers not to sell vegetables in small quantities, but the latter did not oblige. Upset with this, retail vendors decided to distribute vegetables free to people as a protest.
