Hyderabad: Telangana has experienced a decline in the enrolment of girl students in the post-Covid years, though the number of girls joining schools are still higher than that of boys, as reflected in the data provided by the RBI handbook.
This is measured by the gender parity index (GPI) of the gross enrolment ratio (GER), which indicates the ratio of girls to boys. One signifies equal numbers.
In some segments, the number of girls being enrolled fell below that of boys. In upper primary education, the GPI declined from 1.0 to 0.98 over the same period, indicating fewer girls than boys at this level.
In higher secondary education, the GPI stood at 1.15 in 2018-19, rose slightly to 1.16 in 2019-20, but fell to 1.08 in 2020-21 and further to 1.06 in 2021-22, indicating fewer girls than before being enrolled. There were still more girls being enrolled than boys.
In contrast, elementary school enrolment has remained consistent, the RBI data showed, maintaining a GPI of 1.0, indicating equal numbers of boys and girls. In lower primary classes, the GPI increased slightly from 0.99 in 2018-19 to 1.01 in 2021-22, suggesting more girls enrolled.
