Telangana Sees Lower Growth in GST Revenue
Hyderabad: Telangana has recorded a lacklustre growth of seven per cent in GST revenues for July compared to a 10 per cent growth recorded for the country. In absolute numbers, the state’s revenue from Goods and Services Tax (GST) was Rs 3,576 crore, which is Rs 231 crore higher than tax collected in July last year.
The country collected Rs 1.8 lakh crore in GST for July. Of this, CGST and SGST were Rs 30,414 crore and Rs 37,842 crore respectively. The IGST collection stood at Rs 84,880 crore.
While Andhra Pradesh saw its GST revenues shrank by five per cent, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka posted higher growth rates at 20 and 10 per cent respectively.
The GST numbers released by the Union finance ministry indicated that the cash component (GST collected on locally-produced goods and services which are consumed in the state) for Telangana stood at Rs 1,625 crore and was Rs 300 crore less than IGST of Rs 1,951 crore.
Cash revenue rose by Rs 2 crore compared to the corresponding month last year. The cash revenue growth for the country, however, stood at seven per cent.
The finance ministry had issued notices to 30,000 tax payers in the last three months. Revenue figures indicate that the measure has failed to garner revenue due to a lack of proper groundwork before identifying and giving notices.
It is also said that the state wing did not take up the identification of fake registrations as per standardised uniform reports as advised by the Union revenue secretary.
The state GST wing has embarked on a programme to register new businesses. To meet the target of adding new entities, notices were issued to shopkeepers with less than the threshold turnover of Rs 20 lakhs per annum. The effort led to loss of manhours in July.
