Telangana: State asks IIT-H to study impact of AP's Polavaram project

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has asked IIT-Hyderabad to study the flooding and submergence of areas in the state caused by backwaters of Andhra Pradesh’s Polavaram project and submit a report in one month.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, at a meeting in January first week to review irrigation related issues, directed that officials reach out to IIT-Hyderabad for a study. He had expressed concern over the potential threat Polavarm posed to the Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple at Bhadrachalam. The famous temple town had experienced severe flooding in 2022 when Godavari river recorded an inflow of 27 lakh cusecs of water.

Principal secretary (irrigation) Rahul Bojja, who wrote to IIT-H, asked the institution to study the impact of flooding, and submergence in Telangana due to the Polavaram project, and suggest preventive and remedial measures.

Among the terms for the study are that IIT-H will examine a report from the Central Water Commission in 2016 on Polavaram project’s backwater impact, and possible scenarios once AP completes construction of the project with a 45.72 metre height and achieves full reservoir capacity. The institute was also asked to study the river’s flow from Bhadrachalam to Dummugudem. During the 2022 floods, Godavari reached a height of 71 feet resulting in submergence of 102 villages in Telangana impacting 16,000 houses.
