Telangana State Way Behind in Patronisation of EVs

Hyderabad: Only a mere 0.8 per cent of the 1.6 crore vehicles running in Telangana are electric vehicles (EVs). The state boasts of only 500 plus electric charging stations, although it aims to have over 3000 charging stations in another 18 months. Compared to other cities, which presently have 1000+ EV charging stations, Hyderabad lags way behind.

These were the facts that came to the fore during a conference on electric vehicles that was organised by FTCCI here on Saturday.

Speaking about policy initiatives on the occasion, Gopalakrishnan V.C., director (automotive and EV sector), in the state industries and commerce department, informed that the state government intends to cover every 3 x 3 km grid with a charging station.

Krishna K. Jasti, founder and CEO of EVRE, , EV charger OEMs and charging infra developers, spoke of the challenges that EV start-ups face, especially because of the slow adoption of EVs across the country. Nearly 20-25 per cent of public EV charging infra could be non-operational due to multiple reasons as they were not like fuel pumps. Their location plays a key role in the economic success.
