Power demand peaks ahead of summer in Telangana

An increase in sowing and other yasangi (rabi) season related agricultural activities have resulted in the surge in demand early in the year

Hyderabad: The state recorded a power demand of 15,205 MW on January 31, which is normally witnessed in March. In comparison the peak power demand in January last year was 13,810 MW.

Power demand reached 9,589 MW this January in the southern discom's jurisdiction, while it was 8,679 MW for the corresponding period last year. In Greater Hyderabad, the demand rose from 3,018 MW to 3,334 MW, a 10 per cent increase in peak demand.

So far, Telangana's highest-ever power demand was recorded on March 8, 2024, at 15,623 MW. This year, the peak demand is expected to reach 17,000 MW, with the southern discom accounting for 10,000 MW and Greater Hyderabad 5,000 MW.

Towards taking stock of the situation, power sector officials held a review meeting that was chaired by Sandeep Kumar Sultania, principal secretary (energy), Musharraf Faruqui, CMD of TGSPDCL, and its other directors were present at the meeting. They discussed measures to ensure quality power supply in tune with the demand.

Senior engineers have been appointed as nodal officers for each district, and the electricity control room (1912) has been strengthened. Officials have been directed to remain vigilant, ensuring uninterrupted power supply and avoiding any inconvenience to consumers.
