Telangana Yet To Appoint Full-Time VCs

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government is yet to appoint full-time vice-chancellors (VCs) in state universities.

On May 22, the government appointed in-charge VCs in 12 universities, who were asked to continue until June 15. Later, the government issued another GO stating that the same VCs would continue until further orders.

The universities are keenly awaiting the appointment of full-time V-Cs. According to sources, the principal secretary of higher education has shortlisted eligible professors for the coveted post.

Meanwhile, several names are being considered for the post of V-C at Osmania University. They include Prof. G.V. Reddy (currently director of PGRRCDE), Prof. Prathap Reddy (former registrar of OU), Prof. Pandu Ranga Reddy (currently director of CPGET), and Prof. M. Kumar (Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies), who belongs to the SC category. Prof. Bhukya Bangya (currently working at the University of Hyderabad, History Department) is from the ST category, and Prof. D. Ravinder Yadav (former V-C of OU) from the BC community is also in the race.

The universities can streamline academic and other developmental activities if full-time V-Cs are appointed in July or before August.

Three major issues concerning the universities have been pending for several years. The teachers are hopeful that the new Congress government will resolve them. These issues are the regularisation of around 700 contract assistant professors (working in budgeted posts), the filling of 1,500 vacant posts of assistant professors (several unemployed doctorates are waiting), and the enhancement of the retirement age from 60 to 65 years according to UGC guidelines. This has been implemented in central universities across the country, including IITs, NITs, and even in some state universities.
