Telangana’s power demand surpass 16,000 MW for first time

Bhatti says power utilities are prepared to meet the power demand

Hyderabad: Telangana on Wednesday recorded its highest-ever peak power demand, breaching the 16,000-megawatt (MW) mark for the first time because of rising temperature and the ongoing Rabi agricultural operations. This makes Telangana the third state in southern India to surpass 16,000 MW demand, preceded by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The peak load of 16,058 MW was recorded at 7.55 am on Wednesday, beating 15,998 MW on February 10 — both these bebing higher than the last year’s peak demand of 15,623 MW on March 8, 2024. The state crossed this figure on February 5, 2025, with 15,644 MW.

Tamil Nadu witnessed its all-time high power demand of 20,830 MW on May 2 last year, while Karnataka hit 17,691 MW on January 31, 2025.

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who also holds the energy portfolio, reviewed the supply situation with the chairmen-cum-managing directors of the two distribution companies and assured the people that the power utilities were equipped to manage the demand, even if it exceeded 17,000 MW.

"The power utilities are well-prepared for the ongoing surge in demand and are ensuring uninterrupted supply,” Bhatti said. “The government is committed to providing uninterrupted power supply as per the rising demand, no matter how high it climbs.”
He said the government had developed comprehensive summer plans to ensure reliable power supply for various sectors, including agriculture, industry, and domestic needs. He highlighted projections from the Central Electricity Commission (CEC), which forecast an annual increase of eight per cent in electricity demand in Telangana until 2030. The demand is expected to reach 24,215 MW by 2030 and 31,809 MW by 2035.

The minister attributed the rising demand to several factors: Urban development initiatives like the Future City and the Musi riverfront development, Hyderabad's growth as a hub for data centres catering to major international IT giants, which consume significant amounts of electricity.
