Hyderabad: Prominent physicians, dentists, pharmacists, and allied health professionals representing the Texas Physicians Society - Southwest Chapter (TIPS-SW) gathered in San Antonio in the US to hold a silent vigil, protesting the rape-murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Those at the protest included former TIPS and American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) president, Dr Rajam Rammurthy, TIPS president Dr Subhashini Valvalkar, and secretary, Dr Manju Badam. Each of them expressed deep concern over the incident and stressed the urgent need for stronger protective measures for medical professionals, students, and women in India.
Dr Valvalkar said: "We organised this silent protest to send a clear message to the governing bodies in India. Medical professionals must be safeguarded, and justice must be swiftly served to the victim's family.
Deepanjan Chakrobarty, president of the San Antonio Bengali Association, who hails from Kolkata, expressed his pain and anger over the incident. " It is outrageous that such violence continues unabated," he stated.
