Hyderabad: After having set up specialised checkpoints that would be manned by armed forces at inter-state borders, the Telangana police, who obtained leads about notorious gangs involved in the smuggling of ganja from neighbouring states, are likely to join hands with the Andhra Pradesh law enforcement agencies to dismantle the ganja supply chain.
A day after Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed the state police to take stern action against those indulging in smuggling and transporting ganja from neighbouring states, senior police officials are understood to have initiated an action plan to work with the Andhra Pradesh police.
Stating that the Telangana is only state having a separate wing -- Telangana State Anti-Narcotics Bureau handling ganja cases, senior officials said that 700 cases have been registered related to ganja peddling have been registered in Telangana and the police arrested around 1000 accused of indulging in the offences in violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
"During questioning, the accused stated that at least 50 percent of ganja was being transported from Andhra Pradesh to Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and other places. We obtained details of notorious gang members from the arrested accused and prepared a detailed report. We will not hesitate to work with the Andhra Pradesh police to curb the ganja menace," a senior officer associated with the investigation related to drug peddling cases said.
