TGCSB issues advisory for mahakumbh devotees to stay safe from cyber frauds
Hyderabad: The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) on Saturday urged all devotees planning to attend the upcoming Mahakumbh in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh to stay vigilant while making travel arrangements, particularly online hotel, Dharamshala, and guest house bookings.
With millions of visitors expected during the 45-day event, cybercriminals are actively exploiting the demand for accommodations by creating fake websites and links to deceive unsuspecting pilgrims, said Shikha Goel, Director, TGCSB.
She said the people should be cautious of cyber fraudulent booking scams fraudsters who are luring devotees by offering accommodations at significantly discounted rates. They set up fraudulent websites and fake booking links to collect advance payments for hotels, Dharamshala, and tent cities without providing actual reservations.
Listing out recommendations for Mahakumbh attendees, she asked devotees to book accommodations only through official channels and use verified contact numbers and websites provided by the Uttar Pradesh government. The official list of approved accommodations is available at https://kumbh.gov.in/en/Wheretostaylist.
Avoid clicking on unknown links or advertisements offering accommodation at unusually low prices and do not make advance payments to unknown accounts or through unofficial booking platforms Shikha Goel said, asking devout to verify the authenticity of any accommodation or service provider by cross-checking with official directories or contacting state authorities directly apart from maintaining caution when sharing personal or financial information online.
“If anyone suspect fraud or have been targeted by a cybercriminal, immediately disconnect from any further communication with the scammer and file a complaint by calling the national cyber crime helpline at 1930 or visit the official cybercrime reporting portal at www.cybercrime.gov.in,” she said.
Stating that the TGCSB remains committed to ensuring a safe digital experience for citizens, she urged everyone to practice good cyber hygiene while planning their pilgrimage.
