TS HC notices to govt over nonuse of Telugu

Hyderabad: A Division Bench of the Telangana High Court comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J. Sreenivas Rao on Wednesday issued notices to the State government directing it to respond to a public interest litigation (PIL), which challenged the non-implementation of Telangana State Official Languages Act, 1966, in the state`s correspondence and while issuing the government orders.

According to the Act, the Telugu language was adopted as the language to be used for the official purposes of the state and for the transaction of business in the state legislature. Telugu should be used in all the Bills or amendments made in either House of the Legislature of the state and in all the Acts passed by the Legislature.

A language activist named G. Uma Maheshwar Rao, 72, filed the PIL complaining that several GOs were issued to implement the Act, but, still, the government used only the English language in issuing the government orders, ordinances and other official correspondence. The court issued notices to the Chief Secretary and principal secretary of general administration and others directing them to file counters.
