Ugandan woman gets 13 years RI in Hyderabad airport drugs case
Hyderabad: A local court in Ranga Reddy district sentenced a woman from Uganda to 13 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and to pay a fine of Rs.1 lakh in connection with the airport drugs case.
The sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted the woman on June 5, 2021 at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad. The woman had returned to the airport to collect her missed check-in baggage from a prior journey from Harare to Hyderabad on June 2, 2021.
During examination, the officials discovered 3,900 grams of heroin cleverly concealed in her checked-in baggage. The contraband valued at Rs. 25.35 crore was seized and the passenger was arrested under the provisions of the NDPS Act- 1985.
Investigation was carried out and a complaint was filed before the first Additional District and Sessions Judge in Ranga Reddy district, L B Nagar.
The court conducted the trial and opined that the prosecution has established the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt for the offences punishable under Section 23(c) of the NDPS Act-1985 and convicted her under Section 235(2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.
The Judge sentenced the accused to rigorous imprisonment of 13 years and to pay a fine of Rs. 1 lakh and in default the woman must undergo simple imprisonment for a period of three more months.
