University of Hyderabad Goes Wheelchair Friendly

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) has introduced campus-wide wheelchair facilities in all academic and administrative buildings, auditoria, lecture halls and guesthouses. This initiative, which was launched on Monday by vice-chancellor Prof. B.J. Rao, aims to make the campus more accessible for individuals with mobility needs.

This development builds on previous efforts made seven years ago when the university spent Rs 5.5 crore to improve pathways, construct ramps and install lifts in major buildings. The new wheelchair facilities now enhance indoor accessibility and are available across various locations on campus.

Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. Rao said that it was important to maintain the wheelchairs and their availability for anyone who requires them. He also directed that buildings be made more accessible wherever necessary.

The wheelchairs were procured by the Empowered Committee for Differently-Abled Persons (ECDAP) with funding from the Institution of Eminence (IoE). They have been distributed to schools, special centres, auditoriums and other public spaces. The Estate Section will oversee their upkeep and allocation.

The event was attended by senior officials, including Registrar Dr Devesh Nigam, IoE director Prof. Ghanshyam Krishna, ECDAP chairperson Prof. Pavan Kumar Pammi, and students and staff from various departments.
